Quality education, care and play
for children from birth to age 14
makes a real difference to their lives,
laying the foundation for all-round
development in their crucial
formative years and preparing them
for adulthood.
Thousands of children are already
benefiting from the input of people
like you – people who care about
children and their future, who
have the commitment, energy and
enthusiasm to be positive role
models, and who value the
opportunity for a worthwhile career.
You'd be playing a key role in the
lives of the children you care for.
Your involvement could help children
develop social and learning skills
that would stand them in good
stead throughout their lives.
So why work with children?
Because children deserve a good
start. After all, they're our future.
What sort of qualifications are there?
Most employers are looking for qualified and unqualified staff. There is a
range of training available and you can find full time, part time or work based
training that fits in with your life.
There are different levels of qualification suitable for every stage of your
career, from leaving school to higher education level. You can gain a
recognised qualification in a way that suits you.
Foundation level - For people with little or no experience
of working with children. At college you will be given work placements to gain practical experience or as an apprentice you will train while you work.
Level 2 - For those who are working under supervision such as a Nursery Assistant or Playgroup Assistant working with children under five or an assistant playworker in an out of school setting.
Level 3 - For those who work on their own initiative, planning and organising their own work and supervising others, for example, a nursery nurse, playgroup leader, senior playworker or a childminder working on their own at home.
Level 4 - For experienced practitioners who carry out complex and non-routine tasks such as a manager of an early years nursery or out of school setting or a development officer for a local authority.
Level 5 (Foundation Degree) and above - For those working
as senior managers and development officers, perhaps working in a children's
centre or leading a small local authority play team, responding to policy or
operational issues, perhaps managing several teams and resources.
